Just as I thought that Asus had the perfect answer to Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 line-up. Oppo quietly launched its direct Xiaomi competitor sub-brand, Realme to go up against Redmi Pro line-up.
Oppo
had previously preferred Camera quality over price-to-performance
factor and had carved out a significant place in that niche like its
sister company, Vivo (They’re both owned by BBK Electronic
Corporations.) Now, the question is that, whether the Realme shines
in performance other than just the camera.

DESIGN:

does sports the latest norm of 18:9 Aspect Ratio 6” Display but
instead of a dual-camera setup like its rivals, it boasts a single
“AI” featured Camera.

Just like its other competitors, the Redmi Note 5/ 5 Pro and the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, it has the extremely outdated Micro-USB port instead of the new norm USB-C ports. Manufacturers should definitely bring the USB-C to the budget devices now.

For a single camera setup, its 13MP AI aided camera is quite impressive comparing to the Zenfone Max Pro M1 and the Redmi Note 5s, but definitely falls short of its rivals.
I had a huge dilemma, comparing these cameras. The camera on this device is certainly good, but good shots are not consistent.

This is very subjective and while some would love its great colour reproduction, great low-light performance and the superb balanced exposure, others may complain about the lesser details it captures. (As every other Oppo phones, this does soften the photos, which in turn decreases some raw details.)

in the expected 18:9 Aspect Ratio.

display of Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 series in terms of brightness and details and sharpness.
Oppo has not specified whether the display is protected by Gorilla Glass but only
that it comes with an unknown Glass Protection.

Performance is where the Realme 1 annihilates its rivals, with its Octa-Core MediatekHelio P60 chipset.
The Helio P60 is an absolute beasts compared to the Redmi Note 5’s and Zenfone Max Pro’s Snapdragon 636 SoC. The Helio P60 comes clocked at 2Ghz and has the very capable Mali-G72 MP3 GPU.

The Helio P60 is an absolute beasts compared to the Redmi Note 5’s and Zenfone Max Pro’s Snapdragon 636 SoC. The Helio P60 comes clocked at 2Ghz and has the very capable Mali-G72 MP3 GPU.
It scored an Antutu Benchmark score of 138321. The phone is significantly faster with its app loading time than its primary competitors and loads games faster too, owing to its Game Acceleration feature.
Gaming performance is good as expected but there lies a problem--- thermal
management.
Even though the Helio P60 is manufactured on the 10nm process instead of the Snapdragon 636’s 12nm Process, which if you don’t know, lower size of the process ensures better efficiency both power and thermal wise, the device runs on the higher side at 45°C (max) after playing heavy games like Asphalt 8 and Mordern Combat.
This maybe due to the plastic body which dissipates heat at a lower rate than a metal body (like in the Redmi Note 5 and Zenfone Max Pro, which stays under 40°C max for similar gaming sessions).
However, the plastic back makes it feel less warmer than it actually gets.
OS/UI:
How
to say this nicely... The Colour OS 5.0 sucks.
There is tons of pre-installed bloatwares and the design of the UI... well, Oppo needs
to fire the designer of the UI team.
The Colour OS has weird icons and oh...the irony, it even has an unpleasant
colour scheme. Coming from Oppo, there is no guarantee of regular updates and
security patches and there is also very thin chances of flashing a custom ROM.
There is tons of pre-installed bloatwares and the design of the UI... well, Oppo needs
to fire the designer of the UI team.
The Colour OS has weird icons and oh...the irony, it even has an unpleasant
colour scheme. Coming from Oppo, there is no guarantee of regular updates and
security patches and there is also very thin chances of flashing a custom ROM.
Your best bet to stay clear of this hideous UI is to install some third-party launcher
app.
BATTERY LIFE:
The
Realme does have the least battery (3410 mAh) against the Xiaomi
Redmi
Note 5s (4000 mAh) and Asus Zenfone Max Pro (5000 mAh) but even on
significant usage it can last through a day.

VERDICT:
Overall
a very good offering from Oppo which is extremely value for money.
