Dubbed as “Desh ka Smartphone”, the Redmi 5A is yet another nail to secure Xiaomi’s position in the entry-segment with priced at just ₹4,999*.
Xiaomi—Ever since its dawn in India with the Mi 3 has shown the other brands in the Indian smartphone turf, what aggressive business strategy is. Xiaomi has dominated the budget smartphone segment and has been the undisputed leader for more than 3 years. And now the brand has one more aggressively priced* Redmi 5A in its arsenal.
Now enough with the intro lets come to the actual review.

DESIGN:
Xiaomi handled the design aspect with “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix” approach. It has a similar design to its predecessors—Redmi 4 and Redmi 4a.
The phone has a 5.0 “HD display and plastic body, but the back has a metallic feel to it. The phone is easier to hold with its compact size and plenty of curves in the corner. One-hand use is a breeze.

LED notification light (Lightly visible), capacitive navigation buttons are at the bottom of the screen, IR blaster is at the top, and the speaker located at the back of the phone. Secondary microphone is at the bottom along with the micro-USB port charging port. On the right side, there’s the power and volume rocker with dual nano SIM slot and dedicated microSD slot (Up to 128GB) at the left. And the audio jack is at the top.
CAMERA:
It has a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, f/2.2 aperture and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture. Various Modes includes Panorama, HHT (Hand Held Twilight), Straighten, Audio trigger, Beautify, Scene and Tilt-shift to blur a part of an image.
For the front camera, it has beautify mode, pro mode and the totally unnecessary smart mode that tries to guess your age using face recognition algorithm like its predecessor--Redmi 4A.

The image quality: daylight shots are decent which gets better with HDR, focussing on smaller object is not smooth even with its PDAF. Low-light shots are noisy as expected.
Flash works well but may be a bit over powering in Handheld Twilight Mode.
The front facing camera, although doesn’t suck, but is very basic and you get what you paid for.
For the price, the rear and front camera are quite decent and is a sin to expect more in this price range.

DISPLAY:
The Redmi 5A just like its Predecessor, the Redmi 4A has a 5” HD display (1280×720p resolution, 296 PPI, 1000:1 contrast ratio).
The display does a fair job of putting-up pixels and the images and text are crisp and sharp with moderately accurate color reproduction.
The viewing angles are pretty good.
Overall, the display is by far the best in class for a sub ₹7,000 device.

PERFORMANCE:
The Redmi 5A has the average performing Snapdragon 425 SoC with 2GB RAM and 16GB Storage OR 3GB RAM and 32GB Storage.
Hardware wise, there’s no change from the Redmi 4A, except for the battery which is a downgrade from the 3120 mAh to 3000 mAh but the change is acceptable and you’ll get a full day’s juice on moderate use.

Gaming performance is same as the Redmi 4A obviously (due to the same SoC).
It plays high end games like Asphalt 8 and Nova 3 with ease in low to medium settings, but once changed to high settings; the Adreno 308 GPU (clocked at 500 MHz) does struggle with very minor frame drops and stuttering.
It’s suggested to drop down the settings to Medium for smooth gameplay.
It doesn’t heat up much on the back due to its plastic back with max. Temperature recorded at 43°C (playing Asphalt 8 at high settings).
Overall Gaming performance is very good at the given price range with no problems. It scores 36476 in the Antutu 6 Benchmark which is even higher than the much more expensive Nokia 3 which scores 27343.
It’s suggested to drop down the settings to Medium for smooth gameplay.

Even with the base model which has 2GB of RAM, multitasking is very well executed. You get around 1.7GB of usable RAM.
The Redmi 5A runs the MIUI 9 out of the box which is based on the Android Nougat 7.1.2 but Oreo upgrade is expected (not confirmed as of now.)
VERDICT:
Overall a very good budget phone which is extremely value for money. Recommended to buy.
